Alewife Count
It's hard to imagine after last year's alewife count of only 7333 for the season, that we could count in one day over 15,000 alewives, but it has happened, thanks to the dedication of many fine volunteers today June 1. We began the day with 3635 alewives counted by Dave Ridley and Martin Bartlett. The noon count of 3356 by Sid Quarrier and Lynne Flaccus was followed by a 4pm count of 8166....by Sid Quarrier and Joel Cook. We now have a new record for a single counting session. Great work everyone! We also had a visit today by Nate Gray from the Department of Marine Resources. We'll be counting again early. As we left at 7:30 this evening the pen was still filling quickly. Many more to count tomorrow.
Our new season total is at 36,326, keep up the good work! Erin
To sign up for the fun use the same Doodle scheduler we used last year. We need two people for each time slot.
Just click on the link and sign up for the days and times that work for you. You can change your selection if you make an error, or have a conflict arise (or email me
erinspencer@hotmail.com and I can help). You will need a pair of waders and a wading staff would be helpful, the rest of the equipment will be provided. If you do not have waders, please send me an email, as I have an extra pair that can be loaned. We meet at the Sennebec Rock Ramp at either 9am, noon or 4pm.
